HP Families,
As we wrap up this week at HP, it has certainly been an unprecedented few days. As Mr. Conlon has communicated, the burst pipe almost a week ago caused us to pivot schedules and classroom locations. We recognize this is very difficult for staff, students and families and we thank everyone for their tremendous support and flexibility. We will continue to update families on the progress of the flood remediation.
As a reminder, school is closed next week for Winter Break.
As we approach winter break, we want to extend our warmest wishes to those celebrating the Chinese New Year. Happy Year of the Horse!
To all families observing the Lunar New Year and Ramadan during this time, we wish you peace and joy in your celebrations.
Despite the day off on Monday, a group of 8th graders still traveled in the evening to the Hebrew Union College Soup Kitchen in New York City, accompanied by Mr. Herbert, me and some parent volunteers. The students did a great job serving.
This week 7th and 8th grade SAIL students attended the VIA (Valley Interdisciplinary Approach) Convocation where they collaborated with students from the Northern Valley to design and construct a robot-powered vehicle. Teams created aerodynamic, emission-free race cars to safely transport an egg through several obstacle and speed races. All the students worked hard and did a great job problem-solving throughout the challenge. Several HP students took home awards for successful designs. Congratulations to Blaise Chiang and Thomas Chen whose team came in first on Thursday, while Eamonn Maginn and Eden Ovadia’s team was recognized for their creativity and teamwork. Quinn Hutchinson, Brandon Sim, and Claire Jeon’s team came in second and Brendan Pribilia and Elisha Kim’s team took third. Special kudos goes to Jason Davila, Nathan Ahn, and Dylan Song for taking a risk and earning extra points for creating the only car with the motor lifted off the ground! On Wednesday, after an exciting round of races, Aaron Saland and Rees Cafuoco’s team and Yuna Ong and Joel Kim’s team tied for first place! Just two points behind the first place teams, Sam Demetrius and Emily Arad’s team earned the award for creativity and teamwork! All the students worked hard and did a great job.
On Thursday, our 4th traveled to Lincoln Center for Young People’s Concerts for Schools: Music for America, conducted by Tito Muñoz, which explores a wide range of American musical voices as part of the New York Philharmonic’s commemoration of the United States celebrating 250 years.
As noted in the district-level communications, a number of events had to be postponed to a later date:
8th Grade Have a Heart - Postponed March Date TBD
5th Grade Cardboard Carnival - Postponed March Date TBD

Please see the attached HSA Book Bonanza information, which now has a REVISED date to end Read Across America week.
