hp wrap up header - September 12

HP Families,

As we wrap up this week at HP, we hope everyone had a restful winter break. I believe we all have snow fatigue at this point and hopefully warmer days are ahead!

Our middle school continues to be mostly displaced. As shared by Mr. Conlon after the break, we got four rooms back, but are still operating without 12 classrooms. Our teachers have been incredible, having to move multiple times and instruct and adjust in new spaces. Students have also been traveling to alternate locations without access to their lockers. We know this is no easy ask and appreciate the flexibility.

In February, across grade levels, we continue to honor and celebrate Black History Month through a variety of lessons and projects. Below is a snapshot of some work to date.

-Read-alouds and individual biography research projects on notable Black Americans.

-Continued lessons on Diversity and Tolerance from our guidance counselors.

-Specialists have been highlighting artists, musicians, inventors and athletes regarding their contribution to those areas and their impact as Americans.

Next week kicks off Read Across America Week. Please see the attached themes!

Mr. Torrie will host a second Parent Academy on Wednesday, March 4th in the Library. The topic is  Winter Wellness – "Rethinking Fats: The Seed Oil-Free Kitchen". Please use the Google Form here to sign up. The session will take place at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 4th, in the HP School Library.

As a reminder, there is only one line of traffic permitted on the Lynn Street pick-up line, and double parking is not allowed. This procedure is in place to ensure clear sightlines for staff and drivers, maintain an orderly flow of traffic, and most importantly, protect the safety of our students as they enter and exit vehicles. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep dismissal safe, calm, and efficient for all families.

There are two minimum session dates in March that we wanted to remind parents about:

Thursday, March 19th - K-4 ONLY Minimum Session Day For Parent Teacher Conferences

Tuesday, March 24th - Prek-8 Minimum Session Day Prek-8 12:45pm Dismissal - Staff PD in the afternoon

Save the Date - 8th Grade vs Staff Have a Heart Volleyball Game Rescheduled - Thursday, March 12th, 3:15-4:15. This event is held in the Big Gym and raises money for the American Heart Association. Tickets will be $3 and this event is open to the entire school community!

The Debate Team finished their season this week with a strong showing in Cresskill.  We would like to congratulate Claire Ra, Hailee Choi, Shael Kim, Jiyoo Choi, Ava Russo, and Rayna Naguada on their wins yesterday. Congratulations to all twelve partnerships that participated in the Debate Club this year.   From researching a complex topic, working cooperatively with a partner, preparing a well-written argument, developing strong public speaking skills, and thinking on their feet when they had to debate the negative side, each and every debater made us incredibly proud.  Great job, HP Debaters!
